New York State Department of Veterans' Services Marks Historic Milestone: First Guardsman to be Interred in New York State Veterans Cemetery - Finger Lakes
The New York State Department of Veterans' Services (DVS) is proud to announce the forthcoming burial of its first Guardsman in the New York State Veterans Cemetery - Finger Lakes. This significant occasion marks a pivotal milestone in New York’s commitment to honor and serve all who have dedicated themselves to safeguarding our nation.
This development has been made possible through the enactment of the Burial Equity for Guards and Reserves Act, which empowers state cemeteries to make decisions regarding the interment of Guard members, Reservists, as well as their spouses and any minor child or unmarried adult child (as defined in 2402(a) of Title 38), without compromising their eligibility for crucial federal grant funding.
Commissioner Viviana DeCohen of the New York State Department of Veterans' Services said, "This is a momentous occasion for our Department and for every Guardsman and Reservist who have contributed to our nation's defense. We are proud to honor their service by providing a dignified resting place within our esteemed New York State Veterans Cemetery - Finger Lakes."
On October 24th at 10 AM, the final committal ceremony for Army National Guardsman PFC Noah Semedo Sr. will take place, making him the first Guardsman to be buried in the hallowed grounds of the New York State Veterans Cemetery - Finger Lakes. PFC Semedo Sr.'s dedicated service exemplifies the very essence of the selfless commitment that our veterans demonstrate in safeguarding our nation and New York is honored to provide him and his family with a dignified resting place.
Traditionally, eligibility for burial in a cemetery under the purview of the VA's National Cemetery Administration (NCA) mandated meeting specific criteria. However, the prior regulations inadvertently excluded many deserving National Guard members and Reservists. With the implementation of the Burial Equity for Guards and Reserves Act, a new era of inclusivity and recognition is made possible, allowing states to fulfill their promise to those who have served, both in life and in their passing.
New York’s choice to bury National Guard members and Reservists reinforces its enduring commitment to serve and recognize the contributions of all who have worn the uniform. It underscores New York State's unwavering dedication to ensure that every veteran, receives the respect and gratitude they have earned through their military service.
New York State Veterans Cemetery - Finger Lakes Director William Yale said, "Today's historic interment of our first Guardsman at the New York State Veterans Cemetery - Finger Lakes is a testament to our commitment to honor all who have served. New York is ensuring that every veteran finds a dignified resting place in our state."
