New York State Division of Veterans’ Services Announces Name Change and Appointment of Retired Army Colonel James McDonough, Jr. as Director of the Division of Veterans' Services

It was announced today that retired U.S. Army Colonel James McDonough, Jr. would be appointed the new Director of the New York State Division of Veterans' Services. The appointment comes simultaneously with the name change of the agency to the New York State Division of Veterans’ Services.

After several years of advocating for a name change to distinguish it from other Veteran Organizations, the change was passed in the 2019-2020 Executive Budget. This change is meant to eliminate confusion between the State agency which advocates on behalf of Veterans and its federal counterpart. The name change is effective immediately.

"I have had the honor of working with Director McDonough before in supporting New York’s Veterans, Service members and their families and I am excited to continue this work together," Executive Deputy Director Joel Evans said. "As Director of New York State's Division of Veterans' Services, he will continue his dedication to serving his fellow Veterans by leading the way statewide with new efforts and initiatives that meet the unique needs of New York’s Veterans.”

Colonel (Ret.) James McDonough, Jr., USA, said, "I’m honored to return to public service and rejoin such a wonderful team as here in the Division of Veterans’ Services. I look forward to serving in this Administration and supporting its efforts to deliver world-class services and benefits to New York’s Service Members, Veterans, and their families.”

Colonel (Ret.) McDonough retired from the Army after more than 26 years of service. He is an Operation Iraqi Freedom Veteran and has served in multiple commands and positions throughout the Army and around the world.

Since May 2013, Director McDonough served as Managing Director for Programs and Services at Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) which included overseeing AmericaServes, a nationwide network of community-based coordinated care and services for Veterans and their families. Prior to this, he worked as the Senior Fellow for Veterans Affairs at the New York State Health Foundation where he worked on developing advocacy campaigns and worked with stakeholders to address the health needs of Veterans across New York State. Jim also served as President of Rochester, New York’s Veterans Outreach Center, one of the nation’s oldest nonprofit organizations supporting the needs of the nation’s Veterans. Director McDonough’s appointment is effective immediately.
