Governor David A. Paterson has directed that flags on New York State government buildings be flown at half-staff on Tuesday, October 13, 2009, in honor of Army Specialist Kevin Hill, of Brooklyn, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on October 4.
Specialist Hill died when enemy forces attacked Contingency Outpost Dehanna with small arms and indirect fire. He was assigned to the 576th Mobility Augmentation Company, based at Fort Carson, Colorado.
“On behalf of all citizens of New York, I extend our condolences and sympathy to the friends, family, and fellow soldiers of Specialist Hill,” said Governor Paterson. “We share their grief in the death of this young New Yorker, but we are proud of his service to this great nation and his devotion to her cause.”

Sergeant Aaron Smith of Manhattan, Kansas, was killed in Wardak Province when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.
Sergeant Smith was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment of 10th Mountain Division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Drum.
"On behalf all citizens of New York I extend our condolences to the family, friends and fellow soldiers of Sergeant Smith," Governor Paterson said. "We mourn his death but we celebrate his service to our country. While he was not a native New Yorker, we consider all soldiers stationed at Fort Drum to be fellow citizens of this great State."

Lance Corporal John Malone was killed in Farah Province while supporting combat operations. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment of the 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force based in Hawaii.
“On behalf of all New Yorkers I extend our sympathy to the friends, family and fellow Marines of Lance Corporal Malone,” Governor Paterson said. “We regret the passing of this young Marine but we honor his service and prize his memory. He gave his life for all Americans.”

Staff Sergeant Nekl B. Allen of Rochester and Specialist Daniel L, Cox of Parsons, Kansas, were killed when their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device and then took enemy small arms fire. Both men were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team.
“On behalf of all the citizens of New York, I want to express our deepest sympathy to the friends, families and fellow soldiers of these two men,” Governor Paterson said. “These soldiers gave their lives for all Americans and the defense of liberty and their sacrifice will not be forgotten. Although Specialist Cox was not a native New Yorker, we consider all members of the 10th Mountain Division and the Fort Drum community to be our own,” the Governor added.

Specialist Abraham Wheeler III of Columbia, South Carolina, was killed when his vehicle was attacked with an improvised explosive device. He was a member of the 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division's 3rd Combat Brigade Team.
“As Governor, I extend the sympathy of all New Yorkers to the fellow soldiers, friends and family of Specialist Wheeler,” Governor Paterson said. “As a member of the 10th Mountain Division, we consider Specialist Wheeler one of our own. His valor and sacrifice will be remembered.”

Specialist Justin Pellerin of Boscawen, New Hampshire, was injured when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Specialist Pellerin was a member of the 2nd Infantry Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, of the 10th Mountain Division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team.
“As Governor, I extend the sympathy of all New Yorkers to the family, friends and comrades-in-arms of Specialist Pellerin,” said Governor Paterson. “This young Soldier was not a New York native, but as a member of the 10th Mountain Division, we consider him one of our own. His sacrifice on behalf of all Americans will not be forgotten.”

Private First Class Brian Wolverton of Oak Park, California, died when his quarters were hit by indirect fire. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division.
“On behalf of all citizens of New York, I extend our condolences to the friends, family and fellow soldiers of PFC Wolverton,” said Governor Paterson. “Although he was not a native New Yorker, we consider all soldiers stationed at Fort Drum New Yorkers in spirit. Specialist Matthew Swanson, of Lake Forest, California, was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum.

Sergeant Jerry Evans of Eufaula, Alabama was killed when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum.
“All New Yorkers mourn the death of this soldier who died defending our country with honor and dignity,” said Governor Paterson. “We express our sympathy to the family, friends and fellow soldiers of Sgt. Evans. Although he was not from New York, we consider him and each of the 10th Mountain division Soldiers to be one of our own.”

Specialist Alexander Miller of Clermont, Florida, was killed when his patrol was hit by small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire. He was assigned to 1st Battalion 32nd Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team at Fort Drum.
"Specialist Miller was a brave and dedicated soldier who gave his life in defense of our nation. On behalf of all New Yorkers, I offer sympathy and condolences to his family, friends and fellow soldiers,” said Governor Paterson. “Although he was not a native New Yorker, he was stationed at Fort Drum and so we recognize him as one of our own.”

Specialist Justin Coleman of Weeki Wachee, Florida, was killed when his unit was attacked by insurgents using small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. Specialist Coleman was a member of the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division.
"It is with great sadness that we recognize the death of Specialist Coleman, who served our country with honor and courage," said Governor Paterson. "We considered him one of our own, as we do all Soldiers who serve at Fort Drum, and on behalf of all New Yorkers I extend sympathy to his friends, family and fellow soldiers. We will honor his sacrifice."

“Lance Corporal Lasher was a brave and dedicated serviceman whose memory will be forever honored by the nation he sought to protect,” Governor Paterson said. “On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends and fellow marines.”

Sergeant Gregory Owens, of Garland, Texas; Specialist Anthony Lightfoot, of Riverdale, Georgia; Specialist Andrew J. Roughton, of Houston, Texas; and Private 1st Class Dennis J. Pratt, of Duncan, Oklahoma, died of wounds received when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device, followed by an attack with small arms and rocket propelled grenades. The four men were all members of the 4th Battalion, 25th Field Artillery, which is part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division.
"It is with deep regret that we lower the flags on our State buildings to commemorate the passing of these four fine soldiers," Governor Paterson said. "While none of these men came from New York originally, they were stationed at Fort Drum and called New York home for a time, we consider them our own. On behalf of the citizens of New York, I extend the fullest sympathy to their families, friends and fellow soldiers. Their sacrifice for our nation will not be forgotten."

“On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend the sympathy of our State’s citizens to the family, friends and the fellow soldiers of Staff Sgt. “I speak for all New Yorkers when I say that we will forever honor the service this young soldier gave to our nation,” said Gov. “On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend our deepest condolences to the friends, family and fellow soldiers of PFC Cross,” Governor Paterson said. “Though he was not a native New Yorker, we consider all Fort Drum soldiers one of our own and we will forever honor PFC Cross’ life of service and sacrifice.”

Sergeant Rodrigo Munguia Rivas, whose home is in Germantown, Maryland, died in a rocket attack on his base at Bagram. He was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division’s 710th Brigade Support Battalion of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team.
“On behalf of all New Yorkers, I wish to extend our condolences and sympathy to the family of Sgt. Munguia Rivas, his friends, and his fellow soldiers in the 10th Mountain Division,” Governor Paterson said. “Though he was not a native New Yorker, we consider all Fort Drum soldiers one of our own and we honor Sgt. Munguia Rivas’s service and will forever remember his sacrifice.”

Governor David A. Paterson today directed the flags on all New York State government buildings to be flown at half-staff on Monday, June 15, 2009, to honor Sgt. Jasper Obakrairur, a Fort Drum-based Soldier who died on June 1, 2009, in Nerkh, Afghanistan.
Sgt. Obakrairur, a member of the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry of the 10th Mountain Division’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team, died when an improvised explosive devise struck his vehicle. He and other soldiers were responding to an enemy attack on a convoy. He was from Hilo, Hawaii.
“On behalf of the people of New York, I extend our condolences to the family and friends of Sgt. Obakrairur and the soldiers who served with him,” Governor Paterson said. “We regret his death, but we honor his service. Although he was born thousands of miles away from New York, we consider him, and all Fort Drum Soldiers, New Yorkers. We will forever remember his brave service to our nation.”

PFC Matthew W. Wilson, PFC Matthew F. Ogden, and Staff Sgt. Jeffrey A. Hall were killed when their humvee struck an improvised explosive device. The three Soldiers were assigned to 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division.
Wilson was from Miller, Missouri; Ogden was from Corpus Christi, Texas; and Hall was from Huntsville, Alabama.
“On behalf of all New Yorkers I extend our condolences to the families of these Tenth Mountain Division Soldiers,” said Governor Paterson. “While they were not New Yorkers to start with, we consider all the Soldiers at Fort Drum our own. The sacrifice of these brave Soldiers will not be forgotten and our hopes and prayers are with their families and comrades in arms.”

Specialist Marko M. Samson, whose home is Columbus, Ohio, but who was stationed with the 10th Mountain Division at the Northern New York Army base, died in a non-combat related incident near Tikrit that is under investigation. Spec. Samson was assigned to the 227th Aviation Support Battalion of the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade.
“As Governor, I extend the condolences of all New Yorkers to the family, friends and fellow soldiers of Spec. Marko Samson,” said Governor Paterson. “While Spec. Samson was not a New Yorker, we consider all the Soldiers who serve at Fort Drum one of our own. We honor their service and we will remember his sacrifice.”

Private Hartford, a member of the 699th Maintenance Company, Corps Support Battalion of the 916th Support Brigade, based at Fort Irwin, California, died in a non-combat related incident that is under investigation.
“I extend the sympathy and heartfelt condolences of all New Yorkers to the family, friends and fellow service members of Private Justin Hartford,” said Governor Paterson. “We are sorry for the loss of this young Soldier, but we appreciate and honor his service to our nation.”

Sergeant Moncada, a member of the 563rd Military Police Company, 91st Military Police Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, died when an explosively formed projectile hit the vehicle in which he was traveling.
“I wish to extend my sympathy, and that of all New Yorkers, to the family of Sergeant Raul Moncada, as well as to his comrades-in-arms in the 10th Mountain Division,” said Governor Paterson. “We share their loss and grief at the death of this young soldier, but we honor his service with pride and gratitude and we will not forget his sacrifice.”

Sergeant Beard, a member of the 147th Postal Company, of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, based in Wiesbaden, Germany, died in a non-combat related incident.
Lance Corporal Oleski, a member of the 3rd battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, a part of the II Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Lejune, North Carolina, died while supporting combat operations.
“On behalf of all New Yorkers, I wish to extend our sympathy and condolences to the family, friends and fellow service members of Sergeant Daniel Beard and Lance Corporal Blaise Oleski.” said Governor Paterson. “We will always recall their service with pride and undying gratitude, and will never forget the profound sacrifice they have made on behalf of the United States of America.”

Lance Corporal Geary, a member of the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, died while supporting combat operations.
PFC Hardt, a member of the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum, New York, died in a non-combat incident.

PFC Devoe, a member of the 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Combat Brigade of the 25th Infantry Division based at Fort Richardson, Alaska, died when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device.

Corporal Mayne was a member of the 5th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team. The unit is part of the 25th Infantry Division based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
Corporal Mayne and two other soldiers died when they came under small arms fire from insurgents while on patrol.
“All New Yorkers are saddened by the death of this young soldier, and we grieve along with his friends, family, and fellow soldiers,” said Governor Paterson. “We are forever indebted to Corporal Michael Mayne for the sacrifice he has made on behalf of all citizens of the United States. Sergeant 1st Class Munden, a member of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, died when struck by enemy fire.

Chief Warrant Officer 3 Philip E. Windorski, a native of Bovey, Minnesota and resident of Watertown, New York.
Chief Warrant Officer 2 Benjamin H. Todd, a native and resident of Colville, Washington.
Chief Warrant Officer 2 Joshua M. Tillery, a native of Beaverton, Oregon and resident of Fort Drum.
All four soldiers were members of the 6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment of the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, which is based at Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield at Fort Drum, New York, and is part of the 10th Mountain Division.

Feliz Nieve, who died on August 28 in Mosul, Iraq.
Specialist Gonzalez, a member of the United States Army Reserve’s 340th Military Police Company, headquartered at Fort Totten, Queens died when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. Specialist Gonzalez was a resident of Spotswood, New Jersey.
Specialist Nieve, a member of the 3rd Squadron, Third Armored Cavalry Regiment based at Fort Hood, Texas died as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle incident.
“On behalf of the people of New York, I wish to extend our condolences to the family, friends and fellow soldiers of Specialist Gonzalez and Specialist Nieve,” said Governor Paterson. “Their brave service and heroic sacrifice to our nation will never be forgotten.”

Sergeant Ulloa was a member of the 515th Transportation Company, 28th Transportation Battalion, based in Mannheim, Germany.
“It is with deep regret that we acknowledge and mourn the death of Sergeant Ulloa,” said Governor Paterson. “On behalf of all New Yorkers I want to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and fellow soldiers of Sergeant Ulloa. His sacrifice to our country will never be forgotten.”
Sergeant Ulloa died as a result of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in the Sadr City district of Baghdad on August 8, 2008.

Governor David A. Paterson has directed that flags on state government buildings across New York be flown at half-staff on Monday, August 11, in honor of Elmont, Nassau County resident Specialist Andre Darnell Mitchell, who died in a vehicle accident in Mosul, Iraq on July 31, 2008.
Specialist Mitchell was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, based at Fort Hood, Texas. The accident is still under investigation, according to the United States Army.
Specialist Mitchell, 25, is survived by his mother, who resides in Elmont, and his father, a resident of Margate, Florida.
“On behalf of all New Yorkers, I want to extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and fellow soldiers of Specialist Andre Darnell Mitchell, who died with honor in service to our country,” said Governor Paterson. “His selfless acts of bravery, courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

Staff Sgt. Alex Jimenez, 25, of Lawrence, Mass., and Specialist Byron Fouty, 19, of Waterford, Mich., had been listed as “missing-captured” after their patrol was ambushed by insurgents south of Baghdad on May 12, 2007. The two men were members of the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, of the 10th Mountain Division, which is based at Fort Drum, Jefferson County.
Their remains were recovered on July 9 and positively identified on July 10, according to the Department of Defense. Five other members of the 10th Mountain Division were killed in the same action.
“All New Yorkers are saddened to learn of the deaths of Staff Sgt. Jimenez, and Specialist Fouty. However we hope their families can find solace in knowing the ultimate fate of these two brave Soldiers, and in knowing that their comrades-in-arms never stopped looking for them,” said Governor Paterson. “Their sacrifice, and the sacrifice of their families, will not be forgotten.”

1st Lt. Daniel Farkas, 42, of Washington Park, Brooklyn, died of injuries suffered from a non-hostile incident at Camp Phoenix in Kabul, Afghanistan. The incident is under investigation.
1st Lt. Farkas was assigned to the headquarters of the 27th Brigade Combat Team, based in Syracuse. At home, he served as a Lieutenant in the New York City Police Department.

Sergeant First Class Joseph McKay, 51, of Cambria Heights, Queens; and Specialist Mark Palmateer, 39, of Poughkeepsie, died when their convoy came under attack in Logar Province in Eastern Afghanistan on June 26, 2008. The two soldiers were assigned to B Troop, 2nd Squadron 101st Cavalry, based in Jamestown, Chautauqua County. The soldiers and another member of the task force were killed when their armored Humvee was attacked by an improvised explosive device and small arms fire.
Marine Corps Captain Philip Dykeman, 38, of Brockport, Monroe County, died while supporting combat operations in Iraq.s Anbar Province on June 26, 2008. Captain Dykeman was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, which is based at the Marine Corps Base in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Two other marines were killed in the same incident.
"It is with deep regret that we acknowledge the death of these brave members of the New York Army National Guard and Marine Corps," said Governor Paterson. "On behalf of all New Yorkers, I want to express our sympathy to the families of Sergeant First Class McKay, Specialist Palmateer and Captain Dykeman. Sgt. Andrew Seabrooks, of South Ozone Park, Queens; Specialist Anthony Mangano, of Greenlawn, Suffolk County; and Specialist Nelson Rodriguez-Ramirez, Revere, Massachusetts, died when their unit came under attack outside Kandahar, Afghanistan.
“On behalf of the citizens of New York I want to express my deepest regret at the loss of these three members of the New York Army National Guard,” said Governor Paterson. “These brave soldiers fought to protect their State and Nation and it is with terrible sadness but also tremendous pride that we remember their sacrifice. Our hearts go out to their families and their fellow soldiers.”
All three soldiers were assigned to A Troop, Second Squadron 101st Cavalry, based in Geneva, Ontario County. The three soldiers were part of Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix, a multi-national force of more than 8,000 U.S. and NATO service personnel training the Afghan National Army and Police.
The soldiers and another member of the task force were killed in an ambush en route to a training location when their vehicle was attacked by an improvised explosive device and small arms fire.

Staff Sergeant Tyler E. Pickett, who resided in Antwerp, Jefferson County, was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum. He was killed when his unit was attacked by an improvised explosive device. His hometown is Saratoga, Wyoming.
